LEADING THE WAY
FOR CHANGE
The New Zealand Respiratory Conference is a biennial event hosted by the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ.
It is the largest gathering or hui for New Zealand medical professionals with an interest in respiratory health.
The theme of this year's conference is "Leading the way for change." This theme ties in with a number of current changes in the health sector: the recent establishment of Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand and Te Aka Whai Ora / Māori Health Authority; the impact on asthma treatment and management three years after the publication of the NZ Adolescent and Adult Asthma Guidelines 2020; access to standardised management for patients with COPD with the publication of the first-ever NZ COPD Guidelines 2021; and the impending publication of the new TSANZ Bronchiectasis Guidelines. Our presentations will also cover the Foundation's call to Government for leadership and greater regulations around vaping; the impact of housing on health; the use of digital technology as a tool to predict the onset of asthma attacks; the rebound effect of COVID on RSV; long COVID clinic experience, and the lessons learned for future pandemics.
All speakers are leaders in their fields, in many cases combining research with clinical practice.
Over 700,000 New Zealanders live with a respiratory condition - that's 1 in 7 people. Respiratory disease is the third leading cause of death in New Zealand, and chronic and serious respiratory illness continue to make up a substantial contribution to New Zealand's health burden. The massive and persistent inequity of outcomes for Māori and Pacific people highlights the failure of our current health system.
